The Primary Texts Program’s Live Ideas Lecture series will host Dr. Marion Hourdequin (Colorado College) on Friday, October 24th, 2025. Dr. Hourdequin is giving a talk on environmental ethics and Confucianism.

Many ethical traditions offer important insights for environmental ethics. But what about Confucianism? Can a tradition more than 2,500 years old shed light on contemporary issues related to climate change, the environment, and intergenerational ethics? This talk says yes, highlighting three insights from early Confucianism vital for environmental ethics today: a relational conception of persons, the importance of intergenerational communities, and an overarching commitment to harmonies that recognize and value diversity.
